Ama Dablam Expedition
Trip Facts
Overview
The Ama Dablam Expedition is one of the world’s most iconic alpine climbing adventures. Standing at 6,812 meters (22,349 feet) in Nepal’s Everest region, Ama Dablam is often called the “Matterhorn of the Himalayas” because of its elegant pyramid-shaped peak and technical climbing routes.
Unlike trekking peaks, Ama Dablam is a technical mountaineering expedition requiring previous alpine climbing experience, the use of fixed ropes, and proficiency with crampons, ice axes, ascenders, and rappelling techniques.
The mountain’s name comes from the Sherpa language:
- Ama = Mother
- Dablam = Sacred pendant worn by Sherpa women
The long ridges resemble a mother’s protective arms, while the hanging glacier symbolizes the traditional pendant.
